City Council Highlights Non-Profits in Education

If you didn't see last night's Goldsboro city council meeting (July 2024), in addition to other agenda items, they had several presentations which were an AWESOME time of highlighting several educational initiatives going on in our community through non-profit organizations:

Kinetic Minds - This is a FREE after school program for STEM education for students run by a husband/wife team of educators. They presented about a grant-funded program they recently completed for a group of underserved students called the Junior Scientist Academy.

Dillard/Goldsboro Alumni Association - awarded 9 college scholarships to local students this year.

Community Supporting Schools of Wayne County - provides mentoring to at-risk students, restorative justice programs for juveniles, and a theatre arts program. They spoke specifically about their mentoring program and how much of a difference it can make in the lives of students.

I was absolutely thrilled to see the council's desire to support these organizations, especially as a proactive and positive response to the recent violence in our community. As Ms. Selena Bennett of CSS said in her presentation, when it comes to preventing violence in our community, education makes all the difference.

I would strongly encourage you to visit all of these websites to learn more about all of these programs and if you have the time, to volunteer to be a mentor with CSS.
